Fasting To Lose Weight

There are a lot of crazy diet ideas and methods for dropping a few extra pounds. One of the most dangerous and, in the long run, ineffective, is fasting to lose weight.

Yes, if you do not eat, you will lose weight. That fact is rather obvious. But since you cannot fast for the long term, it is not an effective weight loss solution.

Any diet or program that urges you to do something that is not sustainable for the long term is not the best weight loss solution. Fasting is just one example of such diets. Others include liquid diets, extremely low calorie diets, programs that exclude all of a certain important food group and plans that require that you use a certain brand of food.

Fasting, in addition to being ineffective, can also be quite dangerous. Anorexia nervosa is a disease in which people shun food in a quest for weight loss.

While fasting alone will not bring on this condition, it is not a good idea to start utilizing such extreme and/or compulsive measures in order to achieve weight loss. In those who may already have other risk factors for getting an eating disorder, fasting may contribute to that.

Fasting to lose weight will, obviously, result in short term weight loss. The problem is that once you start eating normally again, all of the weight is going to come back. Also, it is very important to remember that there is a huge difference between losing weight and being healthy.

One of the goals of your weight loss should be to improve your health. Fasting to lose weight does not work toward that goal.

Also, when fasting to lose weight it can be rather dangerous to exercise. Your body needs food if you are going to do any type of workout.  Of course, exercise is an important part of any diet and weight loss plan.

Some people think that fasting to lose weight quickly is a great idea. Perhaps there is a special event in a few days and they just want to shed a few extra pounds. Still, if you are the least bit concerned about your health, find another solution. Do an extra thirty or sixty minutes a day on the treadmill, or limit your diet (even if just for a few days) to just fresh fruit, veggies and whole grains.

Now that you know that fasting to lose weight is not the way to go, you will need to figure out what will work for the long term. The answer is quite simple: adopt a healthy eating plan and start or increase your workouts.

Again, that is the only way to lose the weight and keep it off. Even for the short term, fasting to lose weight is not the best idea. While the temptation of seeing quick results can be strong, what good is a few lost pounds if it comes back as soon as you start eating again?

If you are not sure about how to go about setting up a healthy eating plan, consider talking to your doctor or to a certified nutritionist. They can give you advice about what foods to include and what foods to avoid.

Don’t give in to the idea that fasting to lose weight is the best way to drop pounds quickly. Not only is it not effective, but it can be dangerous as well.
